Episode 137 – Suwon have only got one ball!

Episode 137 – Suwon have only got one ball!

The boys meet up this week to discuss all the great, great news happening in the K-League while a certain President is in town, hence the rather interesting background noise!! The boys look ahead to the first round of the playoffs featuring Asan and Seongnam and with no K-League matches on the weekend attention was tuned to the National Team’s upcoming friendlies. First up is the visit of Colombia to Suwon World Cup Stadium before the Taegeuk Warriors welcome Serbia to Ulsan. The Colombians have promised to bring James Rodriguez to Korea which should, hopefully, put a few extra on the crowd. Korea will of course have their own ‘crowd-drawers’ as both Ki Seung Yueng and more importantly Son Heung Min have made the trip over for the games. Coach Shin Tae Yong has come under quite a bit of flak as many don’t view him as a) being good enough or b) imaginative enough to lead Korea out of the group stages in Russia. He needs a good couple of performances from his players to get that much needed breathing space from an expectant fanbase and a less than patient media.

Also on this week’s show the boys discuss the final round of the K-League Classic and Seoul’s chances of an ACL spot, announce their winners and losers of the week, look at some of the Colombians who have graced the pitches in this week’s K-Classic and more…….

Episode 136 – That’s Harrisment!

Episode 136 – That’s Harrisment!

This week the boys gear up for some end of season Shenanigans as the K-League enters it’s final stages and everyone has to start dusting off their volleyball scarfs and flags. Last weekend seen the final round of the Challenge as Asan, Seongnam and Bucheon all battled for the final two playoff spots. Mark is finally able to look out form the behind the couch as Seongnam, thanks to Seoul E-Land, made it by the skin of their teeth despite falling 1-0 to Champions Gyeongnam. There was some pre-match beer, banter and pizza awaiting his arrival in Jamsil as E-Land coach Dan Harris gave him some pointers on how to cope with the 90 minutes ahead. *Spoiler Alert – it involves the biting of nails and consumption of beer (okay Dan didn’t actually suggest the second part). Asan would also join Seongnam in the playoffs as they came from behind to draw 1-1 at Busan which left Bucheon feeling sorry for themselves as they fell short on the day. The fact that the bottom tier had all the seats ripped out before the match meant that not only did the fans watch their team ‘cement’ a lowly 5th position but they also had to endure sitting on cold concrete.

Also on this week’s show the boys discuss the Classic fixtures and the upcoming Player of the Year awards, they congratulate (kind of) Jeonbuk on another title and ultimately star on their badge, they reveal their losers and winners of the week and get all misty-eyed as they remember the Seongnam “glory days” for this episode’s K-Classic!

Episode 135 – A Right Royal VARiety Show

Episode 13

This week saw the return of Mark to co-host the podcast as the guys turned their attention to the FA Cup and the Challenge which plays it’s final round of matches before the playoffs this weekend.  One of the main topics for discussion was more VAR drama as the Video Referee continues to kill the K-League star. This week there were penalties given and taken away and goals chopped off all for what, to the naked eye, seemed ridiculous decisions. The Supermatch ended 2-2 due to a dubious VAR penalty and then Suwon crashed out of the FA Cup with VAR playing yet another heavy role in the proceedings. It’s fairly safe to say that VAR hasn’t been the roaring success many thought, and hoped, it would be and it’s definitely something that needs fine tuning for next year. Interestingly in my old days working in IT VAR stood for Value Added Re-seller, one would imagine you could travel the length and breadth of Korea without finding anyone who sees some added value of this system!!

Also on this week’s show the boys review the recent matches in both the Classic and Challenge, relive a VAR-esque moment involving Dejan and a big screen, reveal their losers and winners of the week, look ahead to the weekend’s clashes and more……

Episode 110 – Someone call a Seongnambulance

“You hide behind your Jekyll and Hyde”

___________________________________________

This week the guys discuss the goings on at FC Seoul as yet again the Champions put in a rather schizophrenic performance as they failed to show up for the first 45 minutes of their match against title rivals Jeonbuk. They were 1-0 down at half-time before Hwang gave them the hair-dryer treatment in the dressing room. This is not the first time that it has taken them a full half to ‘warm-up’ and it must now cast doubts over Hwang’s ability to lead them to a title defence. The boys also discuss just what it takes for Kim Shin Wook to get sent off as he somehow amazingly escaped a straight red card for aiming a petulant kick at Ju Se Jong midway through the first half.

Wasn’t me ref, honest!

Also on this week’s show the guys discuss Seongnam’s shocking start to the season as the boys in black failed to win yet again and still prop up the Challenge table, they preview the upcoming ACL matches, discuss Dejan’s ‘best XI’, preview the upcoming K-League games this weekend and get ready for the birthday party to end all birthday parties!!

Episode 109 – Anyangry Young Men

“I can’t do my homework anymore”

______________________________________________

This week with no Classic action to review due to the international break the focus falls on the Challenge and in particular another dreary day for the fans of Seongnam as Cho Seok Jae (homework) scored a brace to consign The Mapgies to bottom of the table. Mark tries to get through the review without tears in his eyes although he does seem buoyed by the recent FA Cup performance. To say it’s been a tough start in the lower league for Seongnam is an understatement as with only one goal in four matches they have been beyond difficult to watch and must now surely be in danger of spending more time than even the most pessimistic iin black could have predicted pre-season.

Also on this week’s show the boys discuss the Korea v Syria World Cup qualifier, look at the FA Cup 3rd round results and of course discuss that Seoul v Anyang match, they preview the upcoming fixtures and briefly discuss some goings on from China.

Episode 107 – Pitch Imperfect

“Closer each day, Home and Away”

This week the boys review the latest round of both K-League and ACL matches with particular focus on the first match at the Gangwon Ski Resort. Seoul may very well have come away from that game with full points but it was the state of the pitch and the frustration of fans trying to get to the game that has made the headlines. The stadium is a cracking place with the ski jump behind the goals but you really do wonder if it is going to hold up for a full season of football. They have made a lot of noise coming into the 2017 season but whether they can back it has still to be seen.

Also on the show this week the boys discuss the recent exploits of the Korean teams in the ACL (spoiler alert it was awful), they discuss the pending punishment for Bluewings Seo Jung Jin, Seongnam’s tough start to life in the Challenge, preview week 3 of the season and more……

2017 K-League Classic Prediction League – Week 1

prediciton_league_banner_2

For those of you who are avid listeners to the 48 Shades Podcast you’ll know that regularly the guys use their “expert” and “in-depth” knowledge of the K-League to predict the week ahead’s all-important clashes. So we decided that as a regular feature for the 2017 season we would put our reputations on the line and go ‘head-to-head’ over the year to see who really is the Nostradamus of the podcast and who is an Oda Mae Brown in waiting!

We will focus mainly on the K-League Classic and will add in Seongnam and E-Land matches also. The rules are fairly simple as below

3 pts awarded for a fully correct score

2 pts awarded for guessing the correct result – 2-2 instead of 1-1

-1 pt for a reversal – Seoul lose 1-0 instead of winning

-2 pts for a complete reversal – Pohang lose 2-0 instead of winning 2-0

A league table will be compiled so you can track your favourite tipster and prizes will be awarded at the midway point and end of season……perhaps!! Editor’s note: Mark hasn’t done his forfeit from last season yet!

The guys get ready for week 1
